Out of the shadows of patriarchal history, a new tradition has emerged. It all began in 1992, when thousands of Norwegian women began to celebrate Inga, the mother of Håkon Håkonsson IV, one of Norway's greatest kings.

The celebration includes a 10 km. cross-country ski race called the Inga-låmi. This Norwegian phrase means "the pathway of Inga™."

Out of the shadows of patriarchal history, a new tradition has emerged. It all began in 1992, when thousands of Norwegian women began to celebrate Inga, the mother of Håkon Håkonsson IV, one of Norway’s greatest kings. The celebration includes a 10 km. cross-country ski race called the Inga-låmi. This Norwegian phrase means "the pathway of Inga."

Inga’s son, King Håkon, reigned in the 13th century and his legendary escape in the arms of the two famous Birkebeinere warriors (a Norwegian word that literally means "birch-legs" and used because this faction of Norse warriors was so poor that birch bark was used to shield their legs from the cold) has been
commemorated in Norway since 1932. This 55-K cross-country ski race is called the Birkebeiner-rennet.
